Better Championship Series

Today the heavens opened up and the College Football Angels sang hallelujah down on me.  No they didn't hire me to coach Army, but they did take a step toward improving the BCS.  I would like to think it is because of constant criticism from esteemed journalists such as myself.  Today the President of the Mountain West Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference met with some big wigs at the BCS.  I don't know exactly what this means but like usual I would love to weigh in with some of my very respected, and highly debatable, opinions.
The president of the MWC is presenting his case to the BCS for an automatic bid.  I am very excited about the prospect even if it never becomes a reality.  The fact that the BCS big wigs are listening, hopefully means that they recognize that the system is flawed.  The BCS has set in place a four year evaluation process.  Meaning that no new conference can be accepted until the 2011 season.  This meeting is set to offer evidence that the MWC should be considered for early acceptance.  What better evidence is there then the Mountain West's records against powerhouse schools and BCS conferences. Utah has two wins in BCS games, in 2003 they beat Pitt, and this year they beat Alabama.  In 2005 TCU beat Oklahoma in another big bowl game.  The Mountain West went 6 and 1 this year against Pac-10 teams this year, including a win by New Mexico and UNLV, who both finished in the bottom half of the MWC.  The biggest thing that the Mountain West has to offer is substance throughout the conference.  Most of the BCS conferences are loaded with big names at the top but no competition at the middle and bottom.  The Mountain West is a solid conference all the way around.  Dave Christensen, coach at Wyoming, had a good idea when he implied that maybe the four year evaluation period should be retroactive.
The biggest question I have about this proposed meeting is; why is the ACC president going?  Is he offering up his conference's spot?  That would make the most sense.  The ACC is a mediocre conference and doesn't really offer anything to the BCS picture anyway.  I would rather see TCU in an automatic BCS position than Maryland.  No offense John, I kid.  I am skeptical of the BCS, because I don't believe they will just add a spot.  I know there is a valid argument for a variety of conferences that should be escorted out of the BCS.  I, however, in support of my new harmonic outlook on life, think we should just add the MWC.  In my opinion Maryland, you are safe for now.
Whatever the outcome of this meeting, I am proud of the BCS for at least hearing the argument.  I would rather see a playoff but any tinkering with system for it's own improvement is OK with me.  Mark my words now, if the MWC joins the BCS, TCU will be the first National Champion from that conference.  So, live like no one is watching and remember to give every argument a chance even if you disagree.
