Watch Closely Parents....

It is a oft proven fact that a majority of the so called superstars in the NFL  are complete disasters as human beings and the ones that aren't never seem to get any press.  This is mostly the fault of us that watch sports and new shows.  Few of us know or care about the inspirational stories in the League but all of us can name atleast one athlete in the last three week that has been arrested, investigated, or released, due to behavioral problems.  It is sad really that most of us complain about the degenerate professionals but never applaude the one's that do good things on a regular basis. We can all tell you where Plaxico Burriss shot himself, but none of us can name Warrick Dunn's amazing charity.  I know we are to blame.  But my number one problem is the question a man at the bar asked me today, "Who are our kids supposed to look up to?"  First of all maybe you should take on that responsibility.  When did parents stop wanting to be their child's role models?  Secondly, at the time we were having this conversation Sportscenter was running a story on Myron Rolle.  So parents since you are so relunctant to lead your children I want to lead you in the direction of a couple of kids that you should take notice of.
The first is the aforementioned Mr. Myron Rolle.  He gets a mister in front of his name because he is a fully grown man.  I have told his story on this blog before but today he added a much needed chapter.  He will fore go the NFL draft where he is sure to be a first day pick to accept his Rhodes Scholar to study at one of the most prestigious University's in the world, Oxford.  He is a young man and after two years at Oxford will still be able to enter the NFL draft in good health.  The road to his dream of being an NFL football player and a practicing oncologist runs through Oxford.  I say good for him.  He may or may not be a star one day in the NFL but he will be a damn good doctor and has a great chance to get an education and hopefully help make strides in a very needed field.  There is no obvious argument against his decision.  He is not staying in college another year to play football and possibly get hurt, he is leaving football altogether to expand his mind and better himself.  There is nothing you can say to that  except congratulations young man and go get 'em.  Myron Rolle is a quality young man that is obvious flawless in his decision making and wise beyond his 22 years.
Another amazing young man is Tim Tebow.  His passion and desire on the football field is only equaled by his contribution off of it.  While other college students are off on spring break boozing and banging, Tim Tebow is in the Phillipines performing minor surgery and sharing his faith and giving hope to the people.  He walks the walk on and off the field.  Tim is a shining example of how a young man should carry himself.  He is confident and collected.  He has a great head on his shoulders.  He also may never be a star in the NFL but he will have a helluva cheering section.
In the age of Pac-mans and Plaxicos we need a few more Tony Dungys and Warrick Dunns.  I don't want to hear any more about Roger Clemens and Charles Barkely.  I want an age of young  athletes who are as good off the field as they are on it.  But it starts at home parents, so get your job done.  Live like no one is watching and watch only those that deserve to be seen.
