Tough news for many!

It seems like there is no news out there that is good news. Even my beloved sports page is splashed with reminders of the tough economy and crazy world. So today, in a break from my general optimistic view, I have decided to throw my spin on a few of the bad stories in the sports page.

The first victim of today is Matt Leinart. Matt Leinart made news in college by being a pretty boy from southern California. He was a dominant college quarterback in a system that produces stars. His movie star good looks and laid back attitude made him a star in college. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and was poised to be their starting quarterback. But something crazy happened for this one time Heisman Trophy winner. He was indecisive and unable to lead. Since he started in the NFL he has been an utter disaster. Now today a report from Arizona quelled the fiery ego of every douche-bag Trojan fan. Matt Leinart is in a hot quaterback competition in training camp, with third string Cardinal quarterback, Brian St. Pierre. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Here is the goood news though, and unfortunately it is not for Leinart. With the brief success of Matt Cassell and the shunning of Sanchez's decision to leave early, apparently Pete Carroll knows jack squat about the potential of quaterbacks after college. This bodes well for Mark Sanchez.

Victim number two is the Arena Football League. After twenty-one years of mediocre success, the Arena Football League announced that it planned to file bankruptcy. The AFL succeeded for so long because of celebrity owners and it's difference from the NFL. The NFL crushes other leagues that it feels are a threat to it's popularity. But the AFL posed no such threat. It was a goofy little side show that kept football fans entertained until the NFL started again. It will be sad to watch the league fold, but the good news here is for the United Football League. They may be able to grab a fan base if they pick up some for the guys from the now non-existent AFL.

The last two people I wanna talk about today are Michael Vick and Allen Iverson. I can only call them victims because they are privy to their own stupidity. But the truly mystifying thing is that neither of these one time super stars can find a team. With Vick I can almost understand the desire to avoid bad press. But in a league where it seems like one out of every five guys is a felon. And I have to agree with JA. Adande on the fact that wife beaters are far worse than dog fighters in my book. SO it is time for the teams in the NFL to get over it! I would love for Vick to join my Broncos, but I think ownership has done enough to alienate the fan base this off season. Allen Iverson may be looking overseas for a job. This is sad too. He may not have the greatest attitude but he can still contribute. Not to mention he led a revolution, whether good or bad, in sports stars. As Vincent Thomas from Slam magazine put it, "He led a movement, call it the Hip-Hop movement. Iverson was the most cultural relevant athlete of my generation." He was a face for the NBA fan in the nineties whether we want to believe it or not. I am in the minority here because I am rooting for both these guys.

All I can say is the world is a tough place right now. Even the "elite" of our society are feeling the hurt, looking for jobs and loosing money. I find it hard to feel to bad for them, but it is taking over my sports shows. Live like no one is watching and keep pushing forward!
